Why working out with your teen is the best way to boost energy – and connection - this summer!

If you’re a parent of a teenager who wants to get them moving more, and who’d love a little more time to connect with them too, you are not alone! Between busy schedules, social lives, and the constant presence of screens, it’s not always easy to find either the motivation to work out, or quality time that works for both of you.
Being side by side with your teen is a great place to be – moving with your teen is even better. This summer I’m thrilled to be teaming up with the brilliant Annie at Overtake Fitness to welcome parents and teens, together, into her fabulous new studio.

Squat racks, sled pushes, and ski-ergs might already be your thing ... but if they sound either a) made-up, b) confusing or c) downright scary, to you or your teen, you needn’t worry! While there’s a ton of gleaming new workout equipment at Overtake there’s also myself and Annie on hand to introduce and welcome everyone, guide you through simple (but very effective) circuits to get started, and add encouragement and support.
Moving together really could be a game changer this summer, here’s how ...

Positive role modelling
Teenagers might act like they’re not paying attention or don’t care, but they’re always observing. When you show up for a fitness class you’re modelling something powerful: that movement matters, that health is worth prioritising, and that it’s never too late to try something new. Honestly, you don’t have to be super fit (or very fit at all!) to be a great role model ... just being there is enough ... promise!
Walking in ... together
We know walking into a gym studio can feel intimidating, especially if you haven’t been in one before or for a while. The same goes for teens. That’s why these classes are designed to be welcoming, encouraging, and beginner-friendly. Both adults and teens can feel more confident trying new things when they’re doing it with someone they know. Showing up together can take the pressure off both of you.
The same team!
Exercising together gives you a rare chance to be on the same team. No awkward conversations, no lectures — just movement, encouragement, and the occasional sweaty high five. Shared activities can support communication and emotional closeness between parents and teens. Working toward something side by side creates a sense of we’re in this together, and that’s something many teens could use (as well as parents!) But in case it helps to convince your teen that you won’t be joined at the hip, rest assured there will be space in these workouts for the teens to focus on what they’re doing, and for parents to do their thing too.

Having fun ... yes, really!
Enjoyment is one of the biggest predictors of whether people stick with exercise long-term. Group sessions like this tick all the boxes: they’re social, varied, inclusive, and often a lot more fun than you expected! We’ve designed these classes to be enjoyable with a mix of movement, music, support, and structure that helps everyone leave feeling a bit better than when they walked in.
Ready to give it a try?
Whether your teen is already active or just finding their feet, whether you’re a long-time exerciser or completely new to it, this class is for you both. It’s just about showing up and moving together in a supportive environment, but we hope it’s also about creating space for something else: connection. And that’s why training together might be one of the most positive things you can do, for both of you, this summer. We’d love to welcome you in.
Adult and teen sessions will take place on Mondays at 4pm
Monday 28th July – Monday 18th August at Overtake Fitness, Budbrooke, Warwick.
